Some dates are simply expensive: the days just before Diwali, the Christmas–New Year fortnight, the start of school summer holidays, and long weekends. Everyone wants the same flights, and the cheaper fare buckets go first.
Why peak fares rise so fast
As seats sell, airlines close lower-priced buckets and open higher ones. On busy dates this happens early and quickly, so waiting for a "sale" usually doesn't pay off on the most popular days.
A simple plan
- Fix your dates as early as you can. For festival travel within India and for NRIs flying home in December, starting to look a few months ahead is sensible.
- Check the days around your ideal date. Flying a day or two earlier, or returning midweek, often changes the price more than switching airlines.
- Consider nearby airports. Goa has two (Dabolim and Mopa); Delhi-NCR travellers sometimes compare other nearby cities too.
- Get a second price before you pay — especially for the whole family.
If you've left it late
Don't panic-book the first fare you see. Look at early-morning and late-night flights, one-stop options, and splitting the outbound and return across airlines. A travel agent can often check combinations that are fiddly to piece together on an app.
